Threads: the app that rivals Twitter

January 1, 2024

On July 6, 2023, Meta launched a new application in its social networking and messaging ecosystem: Threads. Threads is a text-based conversation platform that competes directly with Twitter.

Meta has deployed Threads in around a hundred countries since the beginning of July, but not within the European Union. In its current form, the application does not comply with EU directives on the collection and use of data.

Whether you're a content creator or an occasional social networker, Threads offers a space to share text in real time.

With Threads, the aim is to take what Instagram does best and extend it to text, creating a positive and creative space for users to express their ideas. As on Instagram, it's possible to follow and connect with friends and content creators, including those you follow on Instagram.

How it works ?

To use Threads, you need to log in with your Instagram account. If you don't have one, you'll need to create one, which you can do directly from the app. You must then choose whether your profile is public or private. This option is independent of the Instagram one: you can make your Threads profile public while keeping your Instagram account private.

However, you can't delete your Threads account individually; you'll need to delete your Instagram account as well.

Threads interface

While the aesthetics of Threads are strongly reminiscent of Instagram in terms of font, colors, icons and visual design in general, the design and layout of the elements are very reminiscent of Twitter.

Under each publication, you can see the number of likes and replies. Without opening the thread, it's possible to like, reply, republish and quote. There's also an option to quickly share a thread to any other social network.

Meta has already made it clear that the application will rapidly improve. For the moment, it's not possible to send private messages, and there are no hashtags to follow an event or a trend.

Is Threads a replacement for Twitter?

While the two applications are very similar, Threads can't yet claim Twitter's place. The platform isn't easily accessible in Europe, lacks many features, and isn't computer-compatible.

Nevertheless, Meta seems intent on developing Threads over the coming months. So we'll know in the coming months whether this new platform has the potential to really take on Twitter.
